Mathematics

The Mathematics Department at Senior is made up of 6 talented and dedicated specialists, all who teach up to A Level. We are very approachable and students are encouraged to seek out their particular teacher if they need help or clarification. Maths Clinic is also held twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes from 1.30pm until 2.00pm. A member of the maths department staff is always available at these clinics and students are encouraged to attend if they need help, support, an opportunity to catch up on missed work or if they just want a quiet place to do some maths work.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

As a result of entrance assessment indicators, pupils are placed in initial groups when they enter Year 7. At the end of the first term they are then formally set. There are formal assessments each term, so to facilitate ease of movement, all classes follow the same curriculum. Set moves are made where appropriate to ensure every girl is challenged to reach her full potential in this subject.

In Year 8, all students take part in a maths practical day off site. The purpose of this is to encourage the pupils to look for maths outside the classroom and to realise that maths is essential in many different areas and can be found in the most unexpected places. In addition to this, all years have the opportunity to take part in competitions run by the UK Maths Trust and in Year 9, a group of students take part in Maths Masterclasses.

Students begin their GCSE at the start of Year 9.

Key Stage 4 (GCSE)

During Years 10 and 11, the students follow the GCSE linear specification from the AQA board at either Higher or Foundation level. All girls are assessed regularly to monitor progress and ensure they are on target and following the correct path.

Course Aims

  • To develop skills in logical reasoning and problem solving through both individual and group study

Course Details

The AS and A Level course is designed to provide a simulating, motivating course in Mathematics. Students develop an understanding of Mathematics and Mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment. They will gain an awareness of the relevance of Mathematics in other fields of study and in society today and develop skills in logical reasoning and problem solving. Students will become familiar with technology including graphical calculators.

Pure Mathematics:  This extends Mathematical knowledge from GCSE in familiar areas such as alegbra, functions, geometry and trignometry and introduces new topics such as calculus, series and logarithms. This section of the course is tested in all examination papers. 

Mechanics:  This is an area of Mathematics which is not studied lower down the school, but which supplements the study of Physics, looking at areas such as forces acting on bodies and the motion of particles.

Statistics:  This again extends your knowledge from GCSE including correlation, regression and probability, but also introduces two of the most important distributions in Statistics; the Binomial and Normal distributions. The idea of using statistics in hypothesis testing is also introduced and a real-life large data set is studied.

Entry Requirements

  • Students require the minimum of Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics to study Mathematics at AS or A Level.
  • An enjoyment of Mathematics is essential.

Teaching Approaches

Teaching will take place in small groups and students will be expected to practise techniques and study independently throughout the course. In certain options, there may be shared teaching, e.g. one teacher will take you for the Pure Maths and another for your chosen Application.

Careers and Support Subjects

Why choose Mathematics? Mathematics combines well with both Sciences and Humanities. In addition to the obvious links with engineering, architecture medicine and other science based subjects, it also has an essential role in courses such as Economics and other Business related degrees. Over recent years, there has been a steady increase in university courses containing some elements of Maths and Statistics for analysing data.

Additional Information

In certain modules a graphical calculator will be required. These can be purchased or hired from school.

A Level Mathematics is a challenging, enjoyable subject that allows the student to develop logical thought processes as well as giving training in organisational and analytical techniques. There are very few areas of life where Mathematics cannot be of value.

 

Further Maths

Key Stage 5 (AS/A Level)

What is Further Mathematics?

Further Maths is an AS or A Level which broadens and deepens the Mathematics covered in A Level Maths. It develops your Mathematical ability and introduces you to new topics, such as matrices and complex numbers, which are vital for maths–rich degrees in areas such as sciences, engineering, statistics and computing, as well as Mathematics itself.

Course Details

The Further Maths course builds on the Mathematics studied in the Mathematics A Level course. The course aims to equip students with the necessary mathematical knowledge to study Maths or a related subjext at degree level.

Pure Maths: This builds on the pure maths studied in the Maths A Level course and also introduces new topics such as matrices, polar co-ordinates, hyperbolic functions and complex numbers.

Discrete Maths: This is an area of Maths that is not part of the GCSE or A Level Maths courses. It introduces you to methods of solving real-world problems involving the fastest, cheapest or most efficient methods.

Further Mechanics or Further Statistics: One of these subjects is studied further and the course builds on material covered in the A Level Maths course.

How can it help me?

Further Maths will introduce you to fascinating Mathematical concepts. It will develop your problem solving skills which will help boost your performance in A Level Maths.

If you plan to apply for any degree that is rich in Maths, a qualification in Further Maths will give your application an edge. You will study more Maths that’s relevant to your university course, which will help you to hit the ground running. Some prestigious university degree courses now require a Further Maths qualification and many university courses prefer students who have studied Further Maths to at least AS Level.

Entry Requirements

Students require Grade 8 or 9 in GCSE Mathematics to study Further Mathematics. It is essential that they enjoy Mathematics!
