Course Aims

Today we live in an ever-changing world. Our landscape is a testimony to those processes that are shaping our environment. The course aims to explore the fundamental concepts and global issues that underpin changes in our world in a people-environment context.

Course Content

Component 1: Physical Geography

What's assessed

Section A: Water and carbon cycles

Section B: either Hot desert environments and their margins or Coastal systems and landscapes

Section C: either Hazards or Ecosystems under stress or Cold environments

How it's assessed

  • Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • 96 marks
  • 40% of A-level

Questions

  • Section A: answer all questions (27 marks)
  • Section B: answer either question 3 or question 4 (27 marks)
  • Section C: answer either question 5 or question 6 or question 7 (42 marks)
  • Question types: multiple-choice, short answer, levels of response and extended prose

Component 2: Human Geography

What's assessed

Section A: Global systems and global governance

Section B: Changing places

Section C: either Contemporary urban environments or Population and the enviroment or Resource security

How it's assessed

  • Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes

Component 3: Geographical investigation

What's assessed

Students complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. The individual investigation must be based on a question or issue defined and developed by the student relating to any part of the specification content.

  • 3000-4000 words
  • 35 marks
  • 20% of A-level

Entry Requirements

  • Grades at GCSE: A*, A, B are deemed desirable and usually result in competent management of the course requirements.
  • Grade C may be acceptable but will require students of a positive attitude to sustain the level of content and comprehension required.
  • Pupils will need to be competent readers and also be able to make extensive notes from their reading.
  • Organisation and presentation skills need to be of a high order.
  • A curiosity and a willingness to engage in discussion are useful attributes.

Careers and Support Subjects

  • This is essentially a skills based course
  • These skills are largely transferable to any careers that require analysis and evaluation, such as those in a management and planning context.
  • Students in the past have found ‘A’ level courses in Economics, Sports Science, Maths, Biology, History and Business Studies to be of a complimentary nature with Geography.
  • Geography at University level is viewed as a Science or Humanity depending on your modular matrix.
  • In essence, Geographical skills are those in great demand both in the ‘Working World’ and in Higher Education.

Progression to A2 is contingent on achieving grade C or above at AS level.
