Careers 'Speed Dating' for Year 9 Pupils

On Friday 2 February, Year 9 pupils at The Marist School in Sunninghill, Ascot, participated in a Careers ‘Speed Dating’ event, held in school. Attended by 15 local, national and international companies, the event was organised to provide pupils with an engaging and informative insight into the qualifications and skills required for specific jobs and careers.

The event began with short snapshot introductions from each of the companies present, followed by a ‘Speed Dating’ style question time in which pupils had the opportunity to network with representatives from organisations including British Airways, Sky Sports and the South Hill Park Arts Centre.

Speaking about the event, Mrs Liz Karakurt, Head of Key Stage 3 at The Marist, said,

“The vision behind the Careers ‘Speed Dating’ event was to offer something unique to our Year 9 pupils as they prepare to make their GCSE option choices. I am delighted that a wide-ranging selection of companies and organisations were able to attend on the day and it has been wonderful to see our pupils fully engaged and inspired from the careers advice that they have received. We hope to run this again in the near future.”

Pupils also responded very positively to the event with the feedback including:

“Mark Hooper from South Hill Park Arts Centre was really confident and gave me advice about what steps I need in my career.”

“I learnt that it's ok not to know what you want to be when you're older.”

“I found Alex from Sky Sports inspiring because he was so passionate about his job.”

“I realised that there is much more to getting a job than just your qualifications, and you should choose a variety of subjects to keep your options open.”

Our Careers Events continue this term with The Marist School Careers Fair taking place on Wednesday 14 March from 6.00pm until 8.00pm. Open to students in Years 9-13 from local schools, the Fair offers the opportunity to explore career opportunities and network with representatives from a variety of local and national companies.
